Hit 2,000 square feet of drywall tape and finally stopped counting

I've been finishing my basement in Columbus for the past 6 weeks, and yesterday I realized I've gone through exactly 14 rolls of paper tape on my own. That number surprised me because I'd guessed maybe half that when I started, and it really shows how much surface area the seams actually eat up. Has anyone else ever tallied up their material usage on a big drywall job, or do you just buy in bulk and forget?

The inspector who made me stop drywalling my own garage ceiling

I was finishing my garage drywall last spring and had hung all the ceiling panels by myself using a cheap lift I rented from Home Depot. The inspector came for the electrical rough-in and glanced up, then asked if I planned to stagger the joints on the ceiling. I told him no, I figured the long runs would be fine. He said fine is not a word he uses when a 4x8 sheet weighs 50 pounds and comes down on your head later. So I pulled down three sheets, cut them to stagger every joint by at least 16 inches, and rehung them with more screws than I thought I needed. Took me an extra 6 hours and a bruised shoulder, but the ceiling is solid now and I don't lay awake thinking about it. Has anyone else gotten code or inspection feedback that forced a total redo on a job you thought was done?

I bolted that little FLIR unit onto my phone last weekend and walked the whole main floor, it immediately showed the cold draft coming through the outlet boxes on the exterior wall, has anyone else found hidden leaks with one of these or am I just late to the party?

My father in law swore by duct tape for pipe wraps, he was flat wrong

He told me last winter that duct tape would hold the foam insulation on my outdoor spigot pipes. Said he had done it for 20 years. By March the tape had peeled off and the foam was hanging like a wet sock. Water got in and I ended up replacing a cracked valve, cost me about $110 in parts and a Saturday. I should have just used zip ties or proper pipe clamps from the start. Has anyone else had a relative's shortcut turn into a bigger repair?

Found out my 2x4s weren't actually 2 inches thick and now I'm questioning everything I've built

Was in the garage last weekend measuring for a workbench and out of pure habit threw a tape on a fresh 2x4 from Home Depot. It's 1.5 x 3.5. I've been building stuff for like 6 years and never once checked. My dad never mentioned it, every project I've made was sized off the label. No wonder my shelf brackets always sat a hair off. This is probably common knowledge to everyone else but it hit me like a brick. Has anyone else had that moment where you realize a basic assumption about materials was just wrong the whole time?

Saw a DIY tile job at my cousin's new house that was a total mess

Visited my cousin in Phoenix last weekend and he was bragging about tiling his own bathroom floor. Looked fine from standing up but when I got down on my knees I saw the grout lines were cracked in 3 spots and some tiles were lipping like crazy. Finally found a cheap fix for my old creaky stairs in Seattle

Our house was built in 1925 and those stairs would wake up the whole floor every time I walked down. I tried powder and WD-40 but nothing stuck for more than a week. Then a neighbor told me to put a bit of bar soap into the gaps where the tread meets the riser. It's been 6 months now and I still can't believe how quiet it is. Has anyone else tried something like this or got another weird trick that actually works?

Everyone online swears by it, but he showed me how dope (pipe dope) alone seals better and doesn't shred into the valve. Tried it on my water heater install last month and zero leaks. Has anyone else been told to ditch the tape for gas lines?

I was standing in the Sherwin-Williams aisle near the greige section last Saturday, holding two paint swatches side by side for like five minutes. I spent $80 on a tile saw blade that was complete garbage

Last month I grabbed this cheap diamond blade off Amazon thinking I was being smart saving 40 bucks over the brand name ones. First cut through a 12x24 porcelain tile and it started wobbling like crazy, then chipped the edge on every single tile after that. I ruined like 3 tiles before I gave up and drove to Home Depot for a proper blade. Anybody have a go-to blade brand that actually holds up for porcelain?

Why I stopped using store-bought grout cleaner and switched to vinegar and baking soda

For years I used that orange bottle of grout cleaner from the grocery store. Cost me about 8 bucks every time and the smell would knock me out. Last spring I had a really grimy kitchen backsplash and ran out of the store stuff. I mixed baking soda with white vinegar to make a paste, spread it on the grout lines, let it sit 15 minutes, then scrubbed with an old toothbrush. Honestly it worked better than the chemical stuff and cost me maybe 50 cents. Has anyone else had luck with homemade cleaners for tile or grout?

Was grabbing supplies for a bathroom reno this morning and heard this dude tell his friend that any brand of joint compound works fine. I've been using Sheetrock brand for 10 years and tried a cheap store brand once. That stuff took twice as long to sand and left bubbles everywhere. Has anyone else found a huge difference between brands?

Tbh I never kept count of my paint jobs till I started doing rooms for neighbors around here in Toledo. Yesterday I finished up number 500 on a little laundry room for a retired teacher. I realized that every single job taught me something different about cutting in lines or picking the right finish for weird lighting. At first I thought 500 was just a random number but it made me think about all the mistakes I made early on like using cheap rollers that left lint everywhere. The big thing is I learned how to prep properly without spending hours taping everything off. Has anyone else hit a random milestone like this and felt weirdly proud of it?

I went with peel-and-stick tile instead of real subway tile and I'm fine with it

Everyone in this sub told me I'd regret using peel-and-stick tile in my kitchen backsplash, but it's been 8 months and it still looks great. I spent $120 total on the whole project versus the $600 estimate for real tile plus install. Sure, it's not going to last 20 years, but I'm renting and the landlord won't pay for upgrades. Has anyone else here had a good experience with peel-and-stick when everyone said it would fail?

Spent $180 on a fancy paint sprayer and wish I'd just used rollers

Bought a Graco sprayer last month to paint my whole living room and dining room. Thought I was gonna save time and get that perfect finish. Spent 4 hours taping everything off, covered all the floors, the whole deal. Then the thing clogged on me twice, had to take it apart in the middle of a project, and the overspray still got on my ceiling even with all the plastic. Paint job looks worse than my buddy's roller work from last year. Total waste of money and a weekend. Anyone else have better luck with a cheap sprayer or am I just dumb with these things?
