The inspector who made me stop drywalling my own garage ceiling
I was finishing my garage drywall last spring and had hung all the ceiling panels by myself using a cheap lift I rented from Home Depot. The inspector came for the electrical rough-in and glanced up, then asked if I planned to stagger the joints on the ceiling. I told him no, I figured the long runs would be fine. He said fine is not a word he uses when a 4x8 sheet weighs 50 pounds and comes down on your head later. So I pulled down three sheets, cut them to stagger every joint by at least 16 inches, and rehung them with more screws than I thought I needed. Took me an extra 6 hours and a bruised shoulder, but the ceiling is solid now and I don't lay awake thinking about it. Has anyone else gotten code or inspection feedback that forced a total redo on a job you thought was done?

You know, I used to be the type who thought inspectors were just there to nitpick and slow things down. My whole mindset was if it looks straight and holds up, why does the pattern of the joints matter to anyone but me? Then my buddy had a ceiling drop on his workbench two years after he hung it, and that thing was heavy enough to dent his truck hood when he was moving it. That story alone flipped my thinking completely. Now I see that staggering joints is about spreading the load and keeping the whole thing from cracking along one long weak line. Fifty pounds of gypsum coming down on your head while you are grabbing a ladder is not a joke, that is a serious trip to the ER. So yeah, I will take the extra six hours and the sore shoulder any day over that kind of regret.

...and that's exactly why I'll never hang another sheet without double-checking my layout. My own ceiling is probably held together by luck and spite at this point, because when I did my garage I was so proud of myself for "saving time" that I didn't stagger a single seam. @diana617 your buddy's story gave me that cold sweat feeling where you suddenly remember every shortcut you've ever taken. I swear my drywall is now self-aware and judging me every time I walk under it, like it knows I cut corners. But honestly, the saddest part is I probably spent more time re-doing that stupid garage after I finally listened to a inspector, so my "saved time" was a total lie anyway. Lesson learned, my shoulders hate me, but at least my truck hood is safe.
