Learned the hard way why you don't skim coat over old gloss paint

Did you try sanding it first or just go right over it? I heard a buddy say you gotta rough it up good or it'll peel off like a snake skin.

Yeah "peel off like a snake skin" is exactly what happened to me too.

My uncle tried the same thing painting his old fence without any prep and it started flaking off in sheets within a month. He ended up having to strip the whole thing down to bare wood and start over, which took way longer than just sanding it would have. Learned that lesson the hard way for sure.
