Question about fixing a squeaky stair tread without removing carpet

I've got this one step on my stairs that squeaks like crazy every time I step on it, and the carpet is stapled down tight with no way to pull it up without destroying it. I tried squirting some WD-40 between the tread and the riser but it only helped for about 2 days before the noise came back. Has anyone had luck with those screw-based squeak repair kits from the hardware store, or is there another trick that actually works?

Did you try using one of those screw-down kits that breaks off flush with the carpet? I'm wondering if maybe the WD-40 just temporarily loosened gunk and the actual fix needs something mechanical to hold the tread tight.

Ugh, that squeak coming back is the worst, isn't it?

Have to spray the hinges again every few months or they always come back.
