That $600 laminate flooring nightmare I should have seen coming
Bought a pallet of "waterproof" laminate from a big box store six months ago and now it's buckling near my kitchen sink. Lost $600 on the material plus three weekends of work ripping it out. Anyone have a suggestion for actual waterproof flooring that won't break the bank?

Oh man that's rough, I feel your pain. I went through the same thing with a "waterproof" vinyl plank that bubbled up near my bathroom vanity. The thing is most of those big box laminates are just okay against spills but not actual standing water. For real waterproof that won't break the bank I'd look into LVP (luxury vinyl plank) with a thick wear layer, like 12 mil or higher. I got some from a local flooring supply place for about $2.50 a square foot and it's been solid through a leaky dishwasher and a kid's water bottle disaster. Have you checked any clearance sections at the smaller tile and flooring shops near you?

That's a solid tip about the clearance sections at small tile shops... been meaning to check those out myself actually. @lilyp37, did you run into any issues with the LVP having a strong smell or off-gassing when it was first installed? I had a friend who bought some cheaper stuff and said it stunk up their whole place for a week. Also curious about how it feels underfoot compared to the basic laminate, is it way softer or pretty similar?
