Google Maps listing tweak that got me 5 new calls in a week
I had a family law firm in Edmonton and kept getting zero leads from my Google Maps listing no matter what I did. I tried changing the primary category from "Lawyer" to "Family Law Attorney" and added 3 specific service areas like divorce mediation. Has anyone else seen a big jump just from category changes or is this a one-time fluke?

Has anyone checked if your Google Business Profile actually has the correct NAP info matching your site? That's usually the hidden killer. @avery_jackson's point about Italian vs restaurant makes sense for the freshness boost, but if your citations are inconsistent it won't matter what category you pick. I'd double check your name, address, and phone are exactly the same everywhere online first.

Oh have you looked into how Google's algorithm treats category changes? I actually read a case study from a local SEO blog that said switching your primary category can trigger a sort of "freshness" boost in local rankings. They mentioned it's not just about the category name but how it matches search intent. For your family law firm, "Family Law Attorney" probably lines up with what people actually type in when they're looking for help with divorce or custody stuff. Also adding those service areas like divorce mediation basically tells Google exactly what you do instead of just being a generic "Lawyer" which gets lumped in with everything from criminal defense to real estate. I'd say keep an eye on it for another week or two to see if the trend holds. The guy who wrote that study said results can take 10 to 14 days to really settle in after a change like that.

yeah @the_linda that "freshness boost" thing is real from what I've seen too. I switched a client from "Restaurant" to "Italian Restaurant" and their rankings jumped like crazy for a week before settling back down. but the 10 to 14 day thing sounds about right, it's not instant. you're totally right about matching search intent though, someone typing "family law attorney" is way different than just "lawyer." and the service areas thing is smart because generic categories dilute your relevance. just wait it out a bit and see if the trend sticks before making any more changes.
