Got burned at a local bar association event last month

I was at the Edmonton Bar Association mixer and mentioned some firm results in casual conversation. Three days later I got a warning from the law society about potential advertising rules. Anyone else run into trouble just talking shop at these things?

Wait, the law society actually sent you a warning over casual chat at a mixer? That's insane. I figured those events were just for networking and talking shop, not getting spied on by the bar association.

Bro that's seriously wild. I'm picturing some old judge hiding behind a potted plant with a notepad just waiting to write someone up for saying "nice brief" too loud. Might as well just hand out muzzles at the door next time and call it a day. Honestly though if they're gonna police that stuff they should at least let us know where the fun zone ends and the "you're under investigation" zone begins.

Okay but hold on, the bar has a responsibility to maintain professional standards and that includes how lawyers talk to each other at official events. If someone was cracking jokes about a judge's appearance or making comments that could be twisted into something inappropriate, that reflects badly on the whole profession. A warning is just a tap on the shoulder to remind everyone they're still on the clock at those things. Better a heads up now than a full blown ethics complaint because some new grad thought a mixer was the same as happy hour at a dive bar. The rules are clear enough if you read the code of conduct, nobody needs a painted line on the floor to figure it out.
