My old boss at a firm on Jasper Avenue told me to ignore local SEO for a year.

He said focusing on big national keywords would bring in more clients. After 12 months, our site traffic was up but we got zero calls from people in Edmonton. I switched to targeting terms like 'Edmonton car accident lawyer' and calls started within a week. Has anyone else had a boss give them marketing advice that totally backfired?

How can you ignore the people right outside your door? That advice feels like skipping the first step in a recipe, you just end up with a mess. My last manager pushed hard for flashy social media trends instead of fixing our broken checkout page. We got likes, but sales dropped for months because no one could actually buy anything. It's so frustrating when they chase the shiny new thing and miss the basics that actually pay the bills. What did you say to your boss after you proved him wrong?

vera_lewis2 is right about the front door. I just showed my boss the sales numbers, the broken page was costing us real money.

That checkout page story is a perfect example. It's like they see a fancy new tool and forget the front door is hanging off its hinges (you know, the thing customers actually use to get in). Fixing the basics first isn't glamorous, but it's what keeps the lights on.
