The cheap paint roller trick that saved my basement ceiling job

I was painting my basement ceiling last month in Edmonton and kept getting lint stuck in the finish. My buddy who does drywall for a living told me to wrap the roller in packing tape first to pull off any loose fibers. I did two wraps of tape, peeled it off, and the third roller was silky smooth. Has anyone else tried this or do you just buy the expensive microfiber rollers?
